And finally…who’s the author behind these crazy stories? It’s Ashlyn Chase of course, and here’s her story.

Ashlyn ChaseBiography of Ashlyn Chase

Ashlyn Chase describes herself as an Almond Joy bar.  A little nutty, a little flaky, but basically sweet, wanting only to give her fans a scrumptious, satisfying, reading experience.

She holds a degree in behavioral sciences, worked as a psychiatric RN for several years and spent a few more years working for the American Red Cross where she still volunteers as an instructor.  She credits her sense of humor to her former careers since comedy helped preserve whatever was left of her sanity.  She is a multi-published, award-winning author of humorous erotic and paranormal romances, represented by the Seymour Agency.

She lives in beautiful New Hampshire with her true-life hot, hero husband (who looks like Hugh Jackman if you squint,) and they’re owned by a spoiled brat cat.

Melissa Foster Shares Marketing Tips For Authors!

I’m pleased to host award-winning author, Melissa Foster, author of best selling novels, Traces of Kara  and Come Back To Me along with many others titles. I met Melissa on Facebook when she commented on one of my posts about My Road to Self Publication. (See, this social media/networking stuff does work!)

Melissa runs Fostering Success, a business designed to help writers learn and improve marketing strategies. Today Melissa is teaching us ways to take the fear out of marketing.

Melissa Foster

Melissa Foster

Tell us a little bit about how you started out as a writer and then how you moved into Fostering Success of other writers.
I am not someone who knew at five she wanted to be a writer. I was twenty-two when the writing bug hit, and once it hit, it was all I could think about. But I had a family and worked full-time, and I had to wait many years until I could really focus on writing. And now…so many years later, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world doing what I enjoy most.

When I first started self-publishing, help was few and far between. It was 2009, and self-publishing was still frowned upon. I struggled for answers and to find marketing paths that actually worked. Along the way, I decided that I would learn as much as I could and help as many authors as I possibly could–without charging an arm and a leg. I opened the World Literary Cafe(www.worldlitcafe.com) as a free resource for authors to cross-promote and connect with readers, and at the time, I was teaching authors 1:1 about marketing and self-publishing. Well, I’m a writer, and my writing time was being sucked away and I couldn’t help authors fast enough. That’s why Fostering Success (www.fostering-success.com) was born. Now I can help hundreds of authors each month, they learn far more than they ever dreamed, and no one is left floundering for information or direction. I also run several private writer’s groups where I help authors navigate the publishing world on a daily basis.

What are your top 3 tips for book marketing?
Exposure is key. Without exposure, your book cannot be found, and exposure can come in the form of free promotions (guest posts, blog tours, interviews, cross-promotions) and/or paid promotions and ads. It’s also vital to have an effective online presence, and to continue writing and giving your audience more of the books they love.

What’s your advice on social media for writers?
I love it because I’m a chattaholic, but it can eat up your writing time for sure! It’s a must for all writers, but it shouldn’t take up their entire days. Limit social media, put yourself on a schedule of a few minutes four times/day, and remember that you probably wouldn’t be tweeting if you weren’t a writer…so keep writing.

Many writers are confused by what their “platform” is, how to develop it, where to find one. Can you shed some light on this topic?

Platforms are one of the hardest concepts to grasp because they’re not tangible. You can’t buy one, steal one, copy one (well, you could copy one, but how unkind is that?). Platforms are what you bring to the table for your audience. Some authors link their books to charities, other authors help writers or become experts in their genre, so their platform becomes “Romance”, for example, while other authors will call their platform their means of marketing.

Your platform goes hand-in-hand with your brand: Your personality, what you bring to readers/followers, and your promise of a certain quality. Your platform will include how you market, where you’re present, and how you will bring yourself and your books to readers’ attention.

Tell us the #1 mistake writers make when it comes to marketing themselves or their books.
Easy, they don’t connect with readers–they spend their time marketing their books to other authors. I call it the Indie Trap.

What services do you provide to help writers in the marketing arena?

Cindy Young Turner & Her Favorite Literary Couples.

Cindy Young Turner shares with us some of her favorite literally couples, as well as a little bit about her two books: Thief of Hope and Journey to Hope  and of course a small bio about herself !

Favorite Literary Couples

I admit that I’m not a big romance reader. But I do enjoy books that have a romantic element. Today I thought I’d share some of my favorite literary couples from my eclectic reading collection

Catherine and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte: A classic  doomed and tormented relationship. I read this when I was 12 or 13 and fell in love with the gothic atmosphere. Catherine and Heathcliff are consumed by their love and the denial of it. For me it’s the perfect example of the kind of love story I enjoy, which doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending.

Claire and Jamie from The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon: Actually this one might be classified as romance. Or time travel. Or historical. Or maybe a combination of all three. It’s one of my favorite series, although I still haven’t read the most recent book. It’s been waiting on my shelf for a while and I’m daunted by the length. Set in 18th century Scotland and moving to America, with occasional shifts to the 1940s-60s, these books are amazing and provide great historical details. Claire and Jamie truly have a romance that transcends time. And I love anything Scottish, especially men in kilts.

Clare and Henry from The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger: I’m sensing a time travel theme here. This was such a unique story. Henry has a genetic disorder that causes him to jump around in time and life his life out of order. When he first meets Clare, she is six and he is in his 20s. Eventually their timelines converge a little and they fall in love. The love shared by Clare and Henry was so touching and poignant. I was literally sobbing at the end of this book.

Lyra and Will from His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman: This series is young adult but I found it complex and well written. Lyra is one of my favorite YA heroines. The relationship between her and Will was very touching. Another book that had me crying as I got to the last page.

Roland Deschain and Susan Delgado from the Dark Tower series by Stephen King: Okay, maybe this is an odd choice. I’m currently reading Wizard and Glass, book 4 in the Dark Tower series. It’s a mix of fantasy and western with a side of horror. Roland is the last gunslinger who has had a tormented life and is fixated on his quest to find the Dark Tower. Part of his torment comes from his lost love Susan. I first read the Gunslinger Born graphic novel, which describes Roland’s life as a young man and his relationship with Susan. Wizard and Glass has a much more detailed account of that part of his life. Roland and Susan are young and engaged in a forbidden romance that is so sweet and full of longing. I’m really enjoying the way King describes their attraction.

In looking over my choices, I seem to go for doomed or complicated and often tragic romances.
Who are some of your favorite literary couples?

cyt_photoWho is Cindy Young Turner?

Cindy Young-Turner has always been an avid reader and became fascinated by mythology and Arthurian legends at an early age. She quickly decided she enjoyed creating her own worlds and characters and set to work writing her own stories. She believes genre fiction can be just as well written and valuable as literature. The universal themes of love, hate, revenge, and redemption are present regardless of whether our characters live in the distant future, on other planets, or in fantastical realms.

Post #9 On My Road to Self Publication

Holy Moly! It’s so busy!

I’m just about 6 months out from launching my book. I’m finishing up edits, preparing for cover art, nailing down my marketing plan and struggling to continue writing book 2 while I get all the other stuff done, oh and working and running a household and trying to spend time with my family. Yes, that pretty much sums up the current state of affairs.

My God, am I tired.

But, the marketing plan has me feeling pretty good, in spite all the outstanding To Do items. I’m still using the Claude Bouchard method of gaining Twitter followers and it’s working quite nicely. I’m up to 2868. And the best part is I’ve met so many cool people. I love this Twitter thing.

I have events scheduled for every month, though some events are permanent occurrences– like launch updated website or launch Eva’s blog. In the meantime, I’ll continue to use social media sites to connect with new and interesting people. I haven’t forgotten my Goodreads topic. I just haven’t had 2 seconds to really sort through using it. I’m continuing to build connections on the site. I just can’t be active everywhere and get everything done that needs to be done so have to limit myself. We’ll get back to that in the coming months. I’ve been fairly quiet on this blog these past couple weeks because I’ve been experimenting with my contest badge and page and I didn’t want to attract a lot of attention while I screwed up the blog page. (No need to make anyone think monkeys are running your blog.)

My first big marketing event kicks off on April 1st and will run until the 26th with a winner announced on May 1. I’m running a Name That Book Contest with quite a bit of help from my friends. I reached out to writers on several loops- CTRWA, NEC, NJ, MFRW, FFnP and I’ve gotten a tremendous response from yes, they’ll place the contest badge on their blog page to yes, they’ll tweet about my contest.

Self-publishing is a challenge. Having the freedom to make all the decisions is liberating and terrifying, not to mention how every failure or “oops, that’s not what I meant” belongs to me. It’s like running a full time business. Every headache and every triumph gets handled in my chair at my desk and usually with a healthy dose of chocolate and occasionally some wine.

Having friends who’ll help you is amazing. I’ve always been afraid to ask people to tweet for me or help me because everyone is so busy and what can I possibly offer them? Reciprocation, that’s what I can offer. This week I asked and offered and (to quote Emeril) BAM! several people stepped up.

I’ve heard it said many times that writers, in particular romance writers (and that may be due to be genetically programmed for a happily ever after) are kind and want to see each other succeed. That we celebrate each other’s successes. And I’ve seen and experienced it first hand. It’s makes me honored to be a romance writer and to be part of such a wonderful group of professionals.

I’d love to hear about your experiences in the romance writing community. What has happened that’s made you thankful to be part

Introducing Constance Phillips

Today I’m hosting Constance Phillips who  is the author of  Resurrecting Harry, now available for purchase! Get your copy before it’s too late!

Thank you so much, Jordan, for having me today

Even though Resurrecting Harry is a book about an escape artist (Harry Houdini) who is able to escape the chains of death, one of my favorite characters to write was that of purgatories keeper – Jaden.

Jaden is more than an angelic creature; he is the voice of Erich’s conscious and a catalyst for the story to happen. I also wanted to make sure he was the opposite of what most would expect when they think of a celestial being. He wears leather, gambles, and doesn’t have much faith in romantic love. In fact, he thinks that it’s Bess’s deep love for Harry that is ruining her life after his death.

In his jaded wisdom, Jaden enters a wager with Harry, giving him a new body and younger face. If he can convince Bess to call of the séance she has scheduled on the anniversary of Harry’s death, he will give Harry (Erich) a second chance at a life with her.

One of my favorite playlist songs to listen to while I was writing the book was Celine Dion’s Taking Chances, because both Erich and Bess have to close their eyes and take a leap of faith.  As much as this book is about the Houdini’s, it’s about treasuring life and living it to the fullest.

Resurrecting Harry

Can the greatest escape artist ever known break the grim reaper’s chains to save the only woman he’s ever loved?

In order to save Bess from self-destruction, Harry Houdini puts his afterlife on the line by entering a wager with purgatory’s keeper. He gives Harry a younger face and body, and a new name: Erich Welch.

Bess clings to his promise to deliver a coded message from beyond the grave, determined to provide the bridge for him to cross, even if that means befriending her husband’s sworn enemy.

Erich needs to help Bess over her loss and put her on the road to healing, but will any good come from resurrecting Harry?

Post #8 On My Road to Self Publication

Yes, yes, I do know this is supposed to be Post #9. I missed a week.

It was a crazy, crazy week. Lots of planning and meetings and more planning and scheming. Then I had contest entries to judge and editing to do.

I haven’t written anything new in more than a week, which is very disturbing because I’m raring and ready. But I am not capable of being productive with so many To-Do Items hanging over my head. And, these edits need to be done and sent back by Friday or I might pull my hair out.

So, this week’s post is short and I’m learning to pace myself, not to over-extend myself, and to avoid setting goals that are loftier than any normal writer can accomplish. Of course, you should know it’s a steep learning curve!

Today is St. Joseph’s Day. I hope you wore red and ate a zeppolle. I’m having mine for dessert!

About Elizabeth Lang:

Elizabethlang

I’m a science fiction writer who started off life as a computer programmer with a love for reading, especially science fiction, fantasy and mystery.

Being in computers, I found my writing skills deteriorating so I decided to take up writing. It became a joy to create characters, stories and worlds and writing soon became a passion I couldn’t put down. As a writer, I like to explore, not only the complexity of characters but the human condition from differing points of view. That is at the heart of the Empire series, of which ‘The Empire’ and ‘The Rebels’ are the first two of a four books series.

She escapes to her dad’s to come to terms with the event and meets some people at her new school who seem all too eager to help her heal. Can she find the strength to move on from the past, reconcile her feelings for Luc, find a way to stop a divine war with fallen angels, and still pass the eleventh grade?

Want more? Here is an excerpt from Speak of the Devil !

SpeakOfTheDevil (1)

Rain fell, not uncommon for late spring in Missouri. “If you don’t like the weather here,” my grandfather would say, “wait five minutes.” Of course, I’d visited distant relatives in Maine once before, and they said the same thing.

Julie fumbled with the wipers while I pulled the sun visor down to check my face in its little rectangular mirror, even though I’d only left my vanity like five minutes ago. The lights on either side lit up the interior of the car. I reached into my tiny party purse to find my lip gloss, which was easy to locate since I’d only packed the essentials in my bag: phone, some cash, and make-up. As I glanced at myself, I saw Mike in the reflection, smiling at me from the back seat. I stuck my tongue out at him, making him laugh, and put on the lip-gloss, fully aware of how flirty I acted.

The windshield wipers couldn’t keep up with the sudden downpour. The pitter-patter turned to thumping. Hail came down in gumball-sized pellets. “Damn.” Julie jerked the steering wheel to keep The Whale off the curb.

“Slow down, Jules.” Mike gripped Julie’s headrest. “We can pull over until it passes.”

“Yeah.” She squinted to see the road before her.

I pressed my lips together to smooth out the gloss. “Damn is right. I didn’t bring a jacket.”

The Whale swerved to the right crunching along the gravel on the side of the road. I braced myself in my seat. Julie leaned up to the steering wheel and peered over it as my grandmother sometimes did when she drove. I squinted because of the stupid light up visor mirror. I slammed it shut, but Julie panicked and over corrected, pulling The Whale to the left and careening over the yellow dotted line in the middle of the street.

“Julie!” Mike shouted.

Time slowed and ticked out in heartbeats.

Ba bum.

Julie cringed, her hands moving up to shield her face. Her head turned away from the highway.

Ba bum.

Mike reached protectively from the back seat.

Ba bum.

The headlights illuminated the rail of the overpass.

Ba bum.

The car hit the rail on the opposite side of the road with a hard thud.

Ba bum.

Crap. We’re going over the bridge.

Ba bum.

The Whale’s nose pointed down toward the water.

Ba bum.

A jolt forward and my forehead slammed into the dashboard.

Ba bum.

The Whale flipped in the air. I’m upside down.

Ba bum.

Pain.

Ba bum.

Did my mom say good-bye when I left?

Ba bum.

Cold water rushed into the car.

Ba bum.

Is this it?

Ba bum.

I can’t breathe. Oh my God, I can’t breathe. I can’t see or breathe!

My heart quickened. It pounded. The Whale leaned on its side under the surface of the water which rushed in fast, and I couldn’t see a damn thing.

Calm, stay calm. Don’t panic. They say when you’re drowning not to panic because you use up your air faster.
Dammit, am I drowning?

I tried to get myself upright and jerked out of my seatbelt. Luckily, it gave way. I fought the latch to open the door facing up, but the pressure of the water from Black Water River held it closed, trapping me inside.

Jesus. I know this river. It’s more of a creek. It can’t be more than fifteen feet across and ten feet deep.
I pushed at the door. Opening my mouth to scream, I swallowed water.

I couldn’t see or hear Julie or Mike. My watch ticked. Or was it my heart beating?

Ba bum. Ba bum. Ba bum.

Darkness.

Silence.

Cold.

Wet.

Defying gravity.

Nothing.

The dreams came. Like a good sleep you don’t want to wake up from. I felt heavy and floaty. I wore this long white gauzy gown and the wind blew my dress and my hair like in some feminine hygiene commercial. I could breathe slowly and deeply. Completely relaxed and at peace, but I was alone.

I floated along in a white space for a while. Drifting. Breathing. Relaxing. Had I gone to a spa? After an immeasurable amount of time, others appeared. They wore white clothing, too, and they floated like me, reaching out. They opened their arms as if to welcome me to them.

I stopped and frowned. I heard no sound, and I didn’t know who these white floaty people were or why they welcomed me. They smiled, genuinely happy, and held their arms out to me. I panicked.

Where’s my mom? My family? Wait, Mike and Julie were just with me, where are they? Are those wings?
I noticed the others floating with me had white feathery wings.

“Lily,” one of them called out.

Holy hell. I’m dead.

Introducing Kate McKeever

This week’s guest post belongs to Kate McKeever who is the author of Caden’s Fate.

Want a sneak peek? Take a look at chapter one from Caden’s Fate

Chapter One

Evil whispered to Fate in the cool morning air threatening her composure as she tried to focus on her friend.

“I wish I had your talent.” Beth sighed into the coffee cup filled with a double shot of espresso.

Startled, Fate eyed her friend. How much does she suspect? She couldn’t know about it, surely. Fate never shared her secrets with outsiders. She toned down the voices whispering in her head and smiled. “My talent?”

“To know what to say in situations like this morning.” Beth pulled her large Danish closer to her and began to pick at the nuts sprinkled on top of the confection.

“It was a difficult time for the family, what with their mother and wife dying so young.” Fate struggled to put something of her talent into terms her friend could understand. “I just tried to give them some measure of hope and comfort.”

“I know. I wish I could have found some words too. I was her nurse til the end and had nothing to say. You get called in at the last minute and do all the right things.” Beth raised tortured eyes to Fate. “I think I’m in the wrong job.”

Fate agreed. Working at a residential hospice could be one of the most trying jobs in the nursing field. Yet, Fate’s position as a medical social worker fit her, in more ways than one.

“You know, there are other jobs out there.” She sipped her own less potent mixture of coffee and cream. “I hear the rehab wing at the university hospital has openings.”

Though they sat at a table in the middle of the city, Fate caught the hint of turning leaves in the crisp dawn air. Underlying it all whispered the ever-present voices, souls calling out to her. And this morning, a feeling of threat hung over the air like smoke.

“Yeah, maybe I’ll look into that. I think I’d do well in rehab. More hope, you know?” Beth’s eyes held a little more life when she looked up from her food.

Fate nodded. She couldn’t imagine being away from the dying, but it wasn’t for everyone.

It hadn’t been the greatest idea, to sit at the sidewalk tables at the coffee house at five in the morning. The other customers abandoned the crisp air, leaving Fate and Beth alone. Fate realized how vulnerable they were, sitting at their table in the dim predawn hour. Fate’s neck grew chilled, as if a cold breeze blew across it, though no wind disturbed the air. Someone watched them. It couldn’t be anything else. She could almost taste the evil in the air as she took a breath.

The buzz of warning in her mind grew to an alarming level, blurring the lines between reality and psychic forewarning. A slight noise from the bushes near their sidewalk table caused her to shift in her chair.

Fate leaned toward her friend and whispered, “Let’s go inside.”

Beth pulled her focus from picking the cinnamon roll to crumbs to glance up at Fate and stare. A minute too long. A man erupted from the bushes. Fate threw up an arm to block the wicked looking blade he thrust toward her. She managed to jar him enough to deflect the blow but gasped as the long knife sliced open her forearm.

Beth scrambled backwards from the assailant. At least the assailant didn’t seem to want her friend, as his attention focused solely on Fate The blood streaming down her arm only distracted her at first, then made her movements slow as she tried to defend herself.

She tried to file away facts, just in case she survived the attack. He dressed totally in black, pants and t-shirt, sported short dark hair and dark, dead eyes. And a serious purpose to kill her, apparently.

“For the soul,” he hissed, sending a chill through her. Was she a random target or did he mean to steal her soul?

Time slowed with each pass he made at her, as did her attempts to deflect the blows the knife, the blade dulled with more blood. Each stroke of his blade created a red-hot trail of stinging pain.

Beth screamed, pulling Fate’s attention away for a split second. A second man, taller and more menacing though he showed no knife, ran toward them. God she hoped he would help. She threw up a hand to dodge another blow.

If this one hit—

But it didn’t and no other jabs followed. She took a breath and glanced around for Beth. Their table overturned in a crash as the two men battled in the pre-dawn light, near the edge of the building. Fate scrambled toward the bundle of humanity lying near the wall. Beth huddled in a ball beyond the overturned table, her arms shielding her head, sobbing.

“Beth, did he hurt you?” Fate started to touch her but decided against it. Though her arms were a mass of blood and slashes, she didn’t feel any pain. A wonderful thing, adrenaline.

She sat beside her friend and cupped her hand over the gash in her own arm, trying to stem the flow of blood and to prevent it from touching Beth. “We have to call the police. Beth! Do you have your phone?”

Beth just rolled into a tighter ball. Fate glanced over her shoulder toward the scuffle. It wasn’t like the movies at all. The men fought in silence, the only sounds, other than the beating of her heart and ever-present murmurs in her head, were grunts and the dull thuds indicating a fist encountering flesh. An acrid tang of fear filled her mouth.

She needed to find someone to help, but how couldn’t leave Beth. She glanced around the coffee shop parking lot. Though cars were parked in several spaces, no one else remained outside. She didn’t see her carryall containing her cell phone. And she couldn’t focus enough to call for help psychically.

So much for her talent.

A sharp movement to her right pulled her head around. Their attacker stood over her. His arm raised and ready to strike. Frozen, she stared into his eyes. No emotion, no crazed wildness, and no drugged haze flickered in his eyes. Just a flat, almost reptilian gaze.

Fate stared at the blade as it swept toward her in slow motion. Eons passed and she waited, too stunned to do more than watch as the knife approached.

The movement outside her bubble of awareness startled her more than the assailant’s actions. The other man kicked out, pushing her attacker into the wall and jarring into Beth. A grunt followed a thud as the second man landed on top of the first.

The faint whimper sounded in her head, almost a plea. She couldn’t discriminate whether it between a call for help in passing the portal and psychic clutter. In her frenzy to stay alive, she couldn’t filter out the sounds, the mess of psychic calls and thoughts she normally dulled.

Fate rolled her head toward the battle but nothing registered. The world receded. The voices. Her constant companions since her earliest memory, faded away to the void.

He’d used two knives, she realized. One, a long one, utilitarian and silver, nothing out of the ordinary, sliced at her arms. The other appeared to be different, alive. Shorter, with a shine that gleamed from within, it gave off power, evil. Did Death Maidens see their own death coming? She couldn’t. And who would escort her through the portal?

Who is Kate McKeever?

me in irelandThe essential Kate McKeever is a dreamer, paranormal romance writer, and voracious reader.

She started writing at a young age, like all writers, but decided to break into romance writing when she joined her local Romance Writers of America chapter. She published two sweet romances  with a New York publisher and now has turned her attention to her first love, paranormal romance.

Kate grew up in the mountains of the southern highlands. After college, several tries at different careers and a lot of soul searching, she has returned to her first passion, writing. You’ll find her in front of her computer most evenings, surrounded by her pets, a calico tabby who is convinced she is queen of the keyboard and a terrier mix whose love of rawhide bones is only surpassed by that of Kate’s  books, with ketchup! You’re also likely to find the remains of coffee and chocolate.

Post # 7 on My Road to Self Publication

In the past week I have become somewhat obsessed with understanding  which social media sites work best or will work best for me once I figure out how to properly use them. My goal, like every other writer, is to connect with readers in a fun way, not a weird, lurking writer, please by my book sort of freaky-deaky way.

So, I’m everywhere or at least that’s how it feels. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google.

You have to know I can’t keep up with all of them and I can’t understand how all of them work or how any writer can manage to use them all at the same time. There’s just not enough time in any week to actively use them all, continue to write and edit and work and have a life that involves actual human contact and not a cyber relationship. I’ve determined it’s impossible! They say knowing is half the battle. I’m accepting I cannot master all of them. It’s a therapeutic thing. :)

I use Hootsuite to try to manage FB, Twitter and LinkedIn. And this attempt is barely working, though I’m doing a much better job. I love being able to schedule posts and tweets in advance. It’s made promoting my posts and my guests’ posts much easier, though I still have to go on to FB to post in the groups.

I’ve had the hardest time breaking the 2,000 follower milestone on Twitter. Somehow I did it last week. I had participated in a couple blog hops and that drove my number upward. And I’m pretty sure regularly posting here and tweeting helped. Then over the weekend on one of the many writer’s loops I came across a link to a guest post by Claude Bouchard on Live Write Thrive, C.S Lakin‘s blog.

Coming Clean About My Twitter Success is a great post that explains how Claude ended up with 250,000 followers. (As I type this he has 347, 970.) Follow the link to learn @ceebee308‘s strategy. I’m using it and have gone from 2002 on Saturday to 2073 tonight.

I’m not a huge fan of managing friends or followers or connections from Hootsuite, but that may just mean I need to “get used” to the layouts. I don’t find it to be visually pleasing, though the column set up works fine. When I’m on Hootsuite rather than the actual social media site, I feel like there’s a mediator between me and whoever I’m tweeting with or some stranger standing in the middle of my FB conversation. So that’s a little odd.

I am a chatterbox. I love to talk to people so reigning in the desire to jump into every conversation I see or to continue talking and talking with tweet after tweet is important. I could easily let Twitter consume all my time.

I almost never use my Google Plus account. I’m not sure what the circles are for and how they work and it’s low on my list of things to figure out. I don’t know how it will better connect me with readers. If you’re a Google Plus user, please share your experiences in the comments. I’d love to know what works for you and how/why.

Pinterest is something I only joined a few weeks ago and I think I get it,  but more concerning is I know I get sucked into it easier than any of the other sites. So damn many cool things to see. It’s a really fun way to connect. Okay, I’ve done less connecting and more pinning and liking, but I have followed a couple boards and commented on a few pics. I’m certain I’ll master Pinterest in short order.

That brings us to Goodreads, which is the second easiest place to waste time. I get lost in the threads and reading reviews and in the groups. The only reason it’s not first on the Time Suck List is because I catch myself and then convince myself I’m actually researching people to friend and follow, thus it’s an acceptable use of my time.

Next week we’ll discuss Goodreads. I’ve read some fantastic articles on how to use Goodreads.

The bottom line for social media is to be social. Interact. Spend time with the people who connect with you. That’s a tough thing to do. There is no way I’m going to be able to tweet to 2073 people everyday or to comment on the posts of 812 Goodreads connections. But the point is to be active and let people know you want to connect. You want to share a little bit about yourself outside of “Read my book” and you want to learn a little bit about them.

What social media are you using and why? How or why does it work well for you?
